About Us
In May1977 a letter written by Pat Pilling to the City of Birmingham suggested establishing a senior citizen program for area senior citizens. By 1978 an ambitious new group from the area had established goals and objectives, adopted the current name the Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council and Center (BASCC). The first published newsletter was titled “Seniors on the Move”.
The organization has moved several times throughout the years but the mission of BASCC is still the same as it was in 1978 which is to identify and meet the needs of older adult and persons with disabilities by soliciting and coordinating community resources to provide educational, recreational and social programs, supportive outreach services and volunteer opportunities.
Over 34 years later, BASCC is a thriving non-profit organization serving 1,100 members residing in the Birmingham Public Schools service area and beyond. Some of the communities served by BASCC include the City of Birmingham, and the Villages of Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, and Franklin. At BASCC, members find a welcoming center in a neighborhood setting with affordable programs that enhance the senior years socially, physically, and intellectually.
